Meeting with Niya K., a local Jewellery Designer who Survives and Thrives

What are the qualities you look for when buying jewellery? Affordability? Design? Investment piece? Brand? A keepsake or memento for a special moment in life? It is a rarity in meet all or even most of these requirements in one jewellery shop. Niyati Kapadia’s jewellery shop, Niya K, can meet a lot of these qualities.

Niya K.- the woman, the creative

Niya K is an Indian-HK jewellery designer with a charming smile and a passion for art and jewellery design. With degrees in Fine Art, Fashion Design and Jewellery Design including from the Parsons School of Design and the Gemological Institute of America, she loves being creative in her jewellery design and injecting some personality in her pieces. It’s also one of the ways she stays competitive in the industry in Hong Kong, as Niya K has new designs and good prices to keep the customers coming back again and again. One of her signature pieces is the rainbow ring, which is made up of rain-drop shaped sapphires each of which are set into a gold ring along the cascade of the colours of the rainbow.

Surviving and Thriving Through Covid

During the Covid restrictions in Hong Kong, she and her husband Jimit found ways to swim with the tide by focussing on upgrading their online shop and website and connecting with their customers online. They also found more customers were willing to spend on luxury products when people were relatively restricted from luxury travel. Their online shop is unique in offering both custom-made jewellery and off-the-shelf jewellery for both genders. For couples who want to purchase a gift for their special someone, they can opt for the ready-made designs or adapt the designs for a custom-made jewellery piece.

Jewellery Range

Niya K specializes in engagement rings–no matter diamond rings, lab-made and pocket-friendly diamond rings or with gemstones. She shared a story where a client asked her to create a jewellery piece from a family crest design and it came out unique and a piece of memento for the family for ages to come. One of her secrets to success is having her husband, Jimit’s, support in the industry as his family has been in the diamond business for 20 years and counting. She built relationships with the manufacturers who she can trust.
